Firewalking has been practised across cultures for thousands of years — from ancient India and China to indigenous communities across the Pacific. Today it’s used as a powerful tool for personal development and mental wellbeing. If you’ve been curious about our upcoming Firewalk Experience on 15th May, here are the answers to the questions we hear most often.
What exactly is firewalking?
Firewalking is the practice of walking barefoot across a bed of hot embers. The coals are burned down from a large fire and can reach temperatures upwards of 500°C. Under proper preparation and guidance, participants walk across the embers without injury.
It sounds extreme. But it is a well-established practice, conducted safely around the world every day, by people of all ages and backgrounds.
Is it actually safe?
Yes — when conducted by experienced, qualified facilitators, firewalking is safe. The science involves several factors: the low thermal conductivity of the ash layer that forms on top of the embers, the brief contact time of each step, and the natural moisture on the soles of the feet.
Our event is led by experienced Celtic Fire practitioners at Tir na nÓg, a dedicated holistic venue with a proven track record of running these events. You will not simply walk up to a fire and be asked to cross it. There is a full programme of preparation beforehand.
Do I need to be physically fit or brave?
No. Firewalking is open to people of all fitness levels. You do not need any prior experience of wellbeing practices, outdoor activities, or anything similar. What matters is your willingness to show up and engage with the process.
Many people who attend describe themselves as the last person they’d ever expect to do something like this. That’s often exactly why it works for them.
What happens on the day?
The evening begins well before anyone approaches the fire. There is a structured programme of preparation — including breathwork, guided exercises, and a gradual process of mental and physical readiness — that takes place over the hours leading up to the walk.
We won’t give everything away here. Part of what makes the experience powerful is the journey to the walk itself. What we will say is that by the time you are standing at the edge of the fire, something has already shifted. The walk is the conclusion of a process, not the beginning of one.
What does it feel like afterwards?
People describe a range of effects following a firewalk. In the immediate aftermath, there is typically a strong sense of elation and disbelief — the realisation that you have done something your mind told you was impossible.
Beyond that, many people report:
• A noticeable reduction in anxiety and mental fog
• Improved sleep in the days that follow
• A renewed sense of confidence and capability
• A shift in perspective on the things they had been worrying about
The experience is deeply embodied — it brings you fully into your body in a way that many people find unfamiliar and deeply grounding. That quality of presence tends to linger.
Who is the event for?
The Firewalk Experience is open to anyone who feels drawn to it. You do not need a specific reason to come. Curiosity is enough.
That said, The Wellbeing Circle works closely with people who are navigating mental health challenges, low mood, anxiety, lack of confidence, and a general sense of feeling stuck. Experiences like this can form part of a meaningful wellbeing journey.
Where is the event taking place?
The event is held at Tir na nÓg, a beautiful holistic centre on the edge of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, seventeen miles north of Glasgow. It is a calm, purposeful space that lends itself completely to this kind of experience.
